GE Transportation has unveiled the first of 1,000 ES43ACmi diesel-electric locomotives for Indian Railways as part of an order valued at $2.5bn.

The Indian Railways WDG4G-class Evolution Series train features the railroad’s new paint scheme, comprising bright red and yellow colours.

GE Transportation Asia Pacific president and CEO Nalin Jain said: “It is great to see Indian Railways’ first locomotive emblazoned in the railroad’s ornate paint scheme.

“This is a great example of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, which will instil a sense of pride in Indians nationwide as it hauls freight throughout the country.”

The company noted that Indian Railways’ new colour scheme took almost 50 gallons of paint to complete. The new coating is expected to protect the locomotive in the harsh operating environments.

GE Transportation is planning to ship the locomotive in the near future, and the train is expected to reach India later this year.

GE Transportation Global Locomotive Operations vice-president Yuvbir Singh said: “This new ES43ACmi locomotive is the ideal solution for Indian Railways’ modernisation efforts.

"This is a great example of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, which will instil a sense of pride in Indians nationwide as it hauls freight throughout the country."

“The design is based on our Evolution Series locomotives. It will provide greatly improved fuel efficiency and emissions compared to Indian Railways’ existing non-Evolution Series fleet.”

The ES43ACmi is a dual-cab locomotive with a 4,500HP engine.

GE Transportation is also manufacturing additional model ES57ACi locomotive for Indian Railways.

The ES57ACi is equipped with a 6,000HP engine and is currently undergoing the design phase. It is scheduled to begin production later this year.
