The new engine was part of a $600m investment made in the Evolution Series platform. GE said this new engine requires no after-treatment to meet the emission targets.

In 2003, GE started manufacturing the Evolution Series to meet the EPA Tier 2 locomotive emission standards. The company was able to meet nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions reductions by at least 70% from Tier 3 emission standards.

The production test took place in the newly built test cell in Grove City, Pennsylvania, which has a total production of more than 3,000 engines a year. GE said that this is the first engine to go through the new test facility.

The engines will now be sent to GE’s locomotive assembly facilities to be installed into an Evolution Series Tier 4 locomotive.
