Gulf oil producers have unveiled plans to construct a $30bn rail network in 2013 to link six nations in the Arab region.

The GCC train project will span 2,117km, starting from Kuwait and traversing Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE to end up in Oman.

The train project will be linked with UAE’s inter-emirate rail network, the construction of which has already started, according to emirates247.com.

The design stage of the project has already commenced and will be completed by the end of 2012, while the executive phase on the ground will be launched at the start of 2013.

Bids for the implementation of the GCC rail project have already been invited, said the National Communications Authority.

The project is expected to be completed in 2017.
