UK’s GB Railfreight (GBRf) has taken delivery of the first batch of five new Class 66 locomotives, which are on order with US-based Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD).
EMD was contracted in September 2013, as well as February this year, to deliver a total of 21 Class 66 locomotives to GBRf. The remaining two batches will be delivered over the next nine to 12 months.

The new trains will be transported to EMD’s maintenance depot in Doncaster, UK. With the latest purchase, GBRf’s Class 66 fleet will increase to 71 trains.
The trains are being procured ahead of the change in EU emissions legislation from January 2015 and are expected to assist in doubling turnover over the next three years, as well as encourage growth into new freight sectors.
GBRf managing director John Smith said: "As a company, we have had an exceptional year.
"These locomotives will allow us to grow our business further in 2015 and continue to provide our customers with the optimum level of service, signifying the confidence we have in the development of the UK rail freight sector and helping us keep the UK economy moving."
