Detector

Spain’s Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) and Barcelona firm Awaait Artificial Intelligence (AWAAIT) have partnered to install a new system at railway stations on the Barcelona-Vallès i Llobregat-Anoia lines to identify and intercept fare-dodgers.

A cooperation agreement to this effect was signed by both FGC and AWAAIT.

Based on artificial intelligence, the new Detector inspection system has a camera watching the ticket stamping area, which generates an alert when it spots a suspected fare-dodger going past.

This alert is sent to an inspector through mobile terminals as a sequence of images just a few seconds after the user in question goes through.

"The new application automates the process of monitoring the video cameras at ticket barriers in stations, by replacing the existing integrated control centre."

Detector also has a management tool, as it automatically generates statistics on fare-dodging in real-time in order to monitor fare-dodgers development over time.

Catalunya and Muntaner stations, as well as other entrances to Provença station are likely to be equipped within this year end.

The new system has the ability to lower the number of mass checks and inconvenience these can cause, by replacing them with selective checks at any time by smaller inspection teams.

FGC’s progress in the SmartTrain concept is currently underway, with the fare-dodging control solution, which uses an application designed on the basis of artificial intelligence algorithms.
