FCC Construcción has secured a €1.634bn contract from the Romanian National Railway Company (CFR) to rehabilitate three new railway sections across the Transylvania region.
The company will complete the work in collaboration with other companies in the rail sector.

The new projects have been financed by the European Commission and form part of a wider rehabilitation and modernisation programme currently underway along the Pan-European Corridor IV rail line, which crosses Romania.
FCC will refurbish section 2, Km 614 – Gurasada under the new agreement, which consists of sub-section 2a, Km 614 – Cap Y Bârzava and sub-section 2b, Cap Y Bârzava – Cap Y Ilteu, as well as section 3, Gurasada – Simeria.
The project is expected to be completed in approximately 36 months.

The scope of work comprises construction and modernisation of a 121.62km stretch of railway line, in addition to 47 bridges, eight overpasses and seven underpasses. A 659m-long tunnel, 19 stations and additional five stops have also been outlined in the plans.
Additionally, FCC’s development schedule is set to include electrification work and European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) implementation.
These sections are the continuation of another two sections that are currently being developed by FCC Construcción, Sighisoara – Atel and Atel-Micasasa via an investment of €472m.
The speed of the train will be increased to 160km/h following the refurbishment's successful completion, and the modernisation programme is also expected to encourage tourism, goods transport and economic development of Romania.
Pan-European Corridor IV runs from Dresden to Istanbul through Romania.
The European Union is supporting the improvement of railway infrastructure along the corridor through community rehabilitation programmes, with the aim of improving railway transport across Europe.
