European high-speed rail operator Eurostar has awarded a contract to NOMAD Digital and France Telecom to supply on board Wifi connectivity and infotainment for its existing fleet of high-speed trains.

France Telecom and NOMAD Digital will provide the services to 14 train-sets, with an option to extend the services to further 14 trainsets.

The new service will offer passengers high-speed onboard broadband internet as well as give passengers the option to download pre-loaded entertainment/infotainment to their own devices via a Secure Wireless LAN.

Nomad said passengers can enjoy high-speed internet at all times throughout their journey, a seamless switchover at international borders, and connectivity wherever the customer is seated and whenever it is required.

The contract is a part of £700m investment and includes the complete overhaul and refurbishment of the existing fleet as well as the purchase of ten new e320 trainsets from Siemens.

The refurbished Eurostar trains and the new e320 trains will be operational from 2013 and 2014.

In addition, the contracts will also cover the provision of spares and maintenance for five years along with monitoring and multilingual service support to passengers.
