French technology group Thales and The Ministry of Transport of Egypt have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish an Egyptian Academy of Transport, Science and Technology in the north of Cairo.

The MoU is in line with the Egypt Government’s plan to modernise the urban and main line rail infrastructure in the country.

This follows an initial partnership agreement signed between the ministry of transport and Thales in 2010.

"This new joint initiative in the transport sector will help us to develop the new generation of Egyptian engineers and managers, thereby serving the country’s strategic objectives."

Through its proposed corporate university, Thales will offer academic and professional training programmes in the field of urban and main line rail.

Egypt Transport Minister Ibrahim El-Dimeery said: "This new joint initiative in the transport sector, and particularly in rail, will help us to develop the new generation of Egyptian engineers and managers, thereby serving the country’s strategic objectives."

Thales Egypt managing director Michelangelo Neri said: "Thales offers turnkey training solutions, ranging from design and development to implementation and support for the creation of academies in technology sectors."

The academy will initially have a group of 200 students and trainees, with plans to increase the number to 1,000.

In 2013, Thales secured a contract to upgrade the 208km long Cairo-Alexandria line.

The company also supplies ticketing and communication systems for the Cairo metro.
