The Dubai Government has approved the station and train designs for the Al Sufouh tram project in Dubai, UAE.

The Al Sufouh project, which is expected to be completed in 2014, will be the first tram system in the world to run with ground power feeding the entire line rather than overhead electrical power cables.

The first phase of the project will cost AED4bn ($1.08bn) and involve the construction of 10.7km of line.

Al Sufouh will have eight trams serving 13 stations, initially to provide transport facility in the new Dubai areas.

The second phase of the project will include 4km of track from the Burj Al Arab Hotel and the Mall of the Emirates; following completion the entire tram project will have 19 stations.

The system will have 25 trams, each capable of carrying 400 passengers, and is expected to carry about 5,000 passengers an hour in each direction.
