DRS purchased ten new Class 88 dual-powered locomotives from Stadler Rail, in collaboration with Beacon Rail Leasing. These were ordered to support DRS’ fleet of 32 Class 68 diesel-electric locomotives.

Testing of second liveried dual-mode locomotives 88001 has concluded in Velim, Czech Republic.

"The new train is an improved version of the Class 68 platform and enables DRS to provide better traction equipment for UK operations."

Stadler Rail said: “During UKDual test campaign in Velim, two main goals have been covered. First, we have focused to perform all tests related to homologation purposes by using the capabilities of Velim test center (TSI track, catenary characteristics, braking distances).

“As a second goal, we have tested and adjusted locomotive performances as traction control in different conditions, diesel engine, and electrical power management, by hauling a train of 1500t and an ER20 locomotive.
