US-based Cummins has launched its new diesel engine QSK95 with 4,000hp (2,983kW) output, which is designed for high-speed diesel for freight locomotives and ultra-class mine haul trucks.

The 95L 16-cylinder QSK95 is the first engine that can be extended up to the 120L 20-cylinder QSK120, capable of over 5,000hp (3728kW) output.

The company said the high-horsepower diesel and gas platform offers more power output when compared with 1,800rpm high-speed engines with 20 cylinders, as well as cost savings providing the same power output when compared with larger medium-speed engines operating below 1,200rpm.

The QSK95 will power the new C3000 series genset from Cummins power generation, providing a 3.5MW high-speed output.

The QSK95 is expected to meet stringent emissions standards, including EPA Tier 4, which is coming into effect in 2015, using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) after treatment to replace the exhaust muffler.
