The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) in the US has awarded a $40.3m contract to Kiewit Infrastructure, marking the start of the second phase of the Brown and Purple Line renovation project.

Construction on the Ravenswood Connector rehabilitation project began in September 2013 with an investment of $71.2m to provide a safer and more reliable service on a key segment between Armitage Avenue and the Loop.

"The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2015, delivering improved speed and reliability for Brown and Purple Line trains."

As part of the contract award, Kiewit will upgrade the tracks along the Brown and Purple Line between Armitage and the Merchandise Mart, in order to remove slow zones on the line, as well as create a smoother and more reliable ride for customers.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2015, delivering improved speed and reliability for Brown and Purple Line trains.

In a separate development, the CTA is set to carry out track improvements between 16 and 18 August on the Brown Line tracks between the Rockwell and Francisco stations over the north branch of the Chicago River.
