Construction of Crossrail’s new stations in London has hit the halfway mark with approximately three miles of platforms and station tunnels built under the city.

The new stations that are currently under construction are at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf, Custom House and Woolwich.

Crossrail chief executive Andrew Wolstenholme said: "Most people have no idea that more than 30m below their feet, a warren of new station tunnels is being excavated across central London."

The 100km-long Crossrail route will serve 40 stations and run from Reading and Heathrow Airport and services are scheduled to begin in 2018.

When fully operational, Crossrail will increase London’s rail-based transport capacity by 10%, as well as support regeneration, reduce journey times and bring an extra 1.5 million people to within 45 minutes of central London.
