Construction of Metrolinx’s East Rail Maintenance Facility in Ontario, Canada, is on track and is scheduled to be completed by end of next year.
Most of the underground foundation work for the 500,000ft² facility has been laid and steel frames are beginning to rise.

Following completion, the new facility will give GO Transit more space to maintain, inspect, repair and store trains as it adds more service across the GO Transit network such as the Regional Express Rail (RER) programme.
The new facility will include capacity to accommodate 13 trains, with the option to expand to accommodate 22 trains in the future, fuelling and washing facilities, as well as provisions for future electrification.
It is reported that at the peak of construction activity, about 1,000 workers are expected to be involved in the C$859.2m ($625.3m) project, which is jointly funded by the Canadian Government and the province of Ontario.
To support construction of the facility, the federal government is providing about C$94.8m ($68.9m) through the P3 Canada Fund, while Ontario is funding the remaining C$764.4m ($556.3m).

The government of Ontario is investing more than C$134bn ($97bn) over ten years in public infrastructure development projects, which would create 110,000 jobs every year across the province.
Upon completion, the East Rail Maintenance Facility will serve as a new rail maintenance facility to complement GO Transit’s existing Willowbrook Maintenance Facility in Etobicoke.
According to Infrastructure Ontario’s Alternative Financing and Procurement contract, Plenary Infrastructure ERMF will be responsible for designing, building, financing and maintaining the facility for a 30-year term.
Ontario minister of transportation Steven Del Duca said: "It’s great to see progress on the new East Rail Maintenance Facility.
"This facility supports our plans to expand GO Transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and is part of Ontario’s Moving Ontario Forward plan, which will mean increased GO service for families in Durham region."
