The newly announced projects are set to receive more than C$20m ($14.75m) under the government’s wide-ranging $55m rail safety improvement programme.

The three-year initiative intends to decrease injuries and fatalities at crossings and improve public confidence in Canada's rail transport networks.

Canada Minister of Transport Marc Garneau said: “Rail Safety is my top priority. With 44,000km of track, we all need to share the responsibility of a safe railway system in Canada.

"The rail safety improvement programme is an essential component of our commitment to improving rail safety by collaborating with railway companies, local communities and road authorities."
