Bombardier Transportation's Chinese joint venture (JV) Shentong Bombardier (Shanghai) Rail Transit Vehicle Maintenance (SHBRT) has received two contracts worth a combined $158m from Shanghai Shentong Metro Group to provide overhaul services for 498 metro cars.

The cars operate in Shanghai Metro's lines 7 and 9, and were manufactured by another Chinese Bombardier JV known as Changchun Bombardier Railway Vehicles Company (CBRC).

Bombardier China president Jianwei Zhang said: “Shanghai operates the longest metro network in the world and we are very proud to be chosen to support this megacity's expanding mobility by providing our broadest portfolio and top quality products, services and solutions.

“The customer's choice is a strong testament to Bombardier's position as a full solution provider across the entire value chain in China.”

The JV will overhaul Shanghai Metro's fleet of metro cars for a ten-year period under the new commitment.

SHBRT is expected to leverage advanced methods and tools such as Bombardier orbita advanced train monitoring system and the maximo asset configuration manager application to carry out overhaul services.

The asset management and vehicle maintenance tool will help improve the metro cars' overall reliability and availability.

Bombardier has been Shanghai's strategic mobility partner since 1999.

The SHBRT JV has also previously provided extensive maintenance services to Shanghai Metro, along with a ten-year services agreement.

SHBRT was established in December 2012 and is jointly controlled by Bombardier and Shanghai Shentong Metro Group.
