The system combines the onboard automatic train protection with a radio-based wayside system to the ERTMS standard, minimising track-side equipment.

Bombardier Transportation rail control solutions president Peter Cedervall said: "We will continue to build engineering and manufacturing capabilities on the African continent together with select partners and ensure our contribution to rapid economic growth."

Bombardier has announced that the work on other railway projects in South Africa and Algeria is currently underway.

Bombardier is working on delivering its INTERFLO 200 mainline solution for two projects in Durban and Johannesburg, in South Africa, under a contract secured in 2013.

The Bombardier CITYFLO 250 solution is already in operation on the Gautrain rapid rail link from Johannesburg since 2012, which was delivered as part of the integrated Bombardier ELECTROSTAR system.

The INTERFLO 250 ERTMS Level 1 solution by Bombardier is also being installed on Saida to Moulay Slissen and Saida to Tiaret lines in Algeria.

These lines are expected to become operational in 2016.
