Bombardier signalling Spain high-speed line

Spain’s Administrator of Railway Infrastructure (ADIF) has awarded a $185m to a consortium led by Bombardier, to install signalling systems and provide maintenance for a new high-speed line in the Extremadura region.

The rail line on the Madrid-Lisbon railway corridor is currently under construction.

Under the contract, Bombardier has a share of €77m ($86m), while the other partners Alstom and Indra own about €62m ($70m) and €25m ($28m), respectively.

The consortium will be responsible for the design, procurement, installation, testing and commissioning of the signalling and communication systems.

Bombardier will supply the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Level 2 on the 164km Plasencia-Cáceres and Cáceres-Badajoz sections of the line using its Interflo 450 system.

Alstom will install its Smartlock 300 electronic interlocking system, while Indra will implement the Spanish automatic train protection (ASFA) system.

The contract also includes a 20-year maintenance regime to start at the end of the first phase of the signalling system delivery.

Last June, ADIF had awarded a €339m contract to the consortium to install ETCS Level 2 signalling on two high-speed lines in north-west Spain.

Bombardier’s share was valued at approximately $195m and it is supplying the radio-based Interflo 450 ERTMS Level 2 system, fixed communications, CCTV and GSM-R technology.

Interflo 450 includes all the trackside products required for high-speed lines, and also the automatic train protection (ATP) system.

The system presents the permitted, actual and target speeds of the train to the driver, with audible and visual alarms, and it is suitable for high-speed lines with speeds up to 250km/h.
