The Government of Victoria in Australia has announced vital upgrades to the City Loop, a mostly-underground, partly surface-level and partly elevated subway and rail system around the central business district (CBD) of Melbourne.

The A$134m ($101m) safety and security upgrade will take place over the next three years, and make the City Loop safer for the 130,000 passengers that use it every day.

It is reported that the A$11bn ($8.3bn) Melbourne Metro Rail Project will unlock congestion on the network by building a new cross-city tunnel, with new CBD stations connected directly to the City Loop.

"The works will ensure passengers can get to work on time, and home safe and sound again at the end of the day."

The scope of work will include the installation of better trespasser detection and fire prevention systems in the four underground tunnels and three underground stations.

As part of the work, an intruder detection system will be installed along with CCTV cameras, alarms and platform barriers, so the metro will not have to shut down the entire underground loop when someone trespasses on the tracks.

Victoria Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said: "This investment will make the City Loop safer and more secure for the thousands of Victorians who use it every day.

"This is the vital safety upgrade that the city loop needs now, while we get on with the project that the City Loop needs for the future, Melbourne Metro Rail."

The upgrade will also include improvements to sprinkler systems at Melbourne Central, Parliament and Flagstaff stations; and it will also involve installation of a smoke management system.
