Monash University’s Institute of Railway Technology (IRT) in Australia has signed an agreement with Indian Railways to assist in establishing a new research and development institute to support the future of rail in India.

The agreement was signed by representatives from Monash University and the Indian Ministry of Railways corporation the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL).

Institute of Railway Technology director Ravi Ravitharan said that the partnership will help advance railway technology in both India and worldwide.

Ravitharan further noted: "Indian Railways is one of the largest employers in the world and this is a very important project not only for IRT but also for Victoria and Australia."

As part of a competitive global selection process, the preferred suppliers selected were IRT and Balaji Railroad Systems (BARSYL) in India, PwC, and the Indian Institute of Bombay (IITB).

"Indian Railways is one of the largest employers in the world and this is a very important project not only for IRT but also for Victoria and Australia."

They will provide guidance on setting-up the new centre in India, which will be known as Special Railway Establishment for Strategic Technology & Holistic Advancement (Srestha).
