The Ministry of the Transportation and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania, RB Rail and Spanish group Ardanuy Ingenieria have signed a contract to carry out an upgrade feasibility study for the ‘Polish / Lithuanian state border–Kaunas–RRT Palemonas’ section of Rail Baltica.

Ardanuy Ingenieria was selected via an open tender process, which saw participation from seven companies.

RB Rail will be responsible for implementing the study on behalf of the ministry under the deal.

Lithuania previously completed the installation of a new European standard gauge (1435mm) section between ‘Polish / Lithuanian state border–Kaunas' in 2015.

Development and construction of the Kaunas node sections Jiesia-Rokai, Rokai-Palemonas, and Palemonas-Kaunas is currently underway.

"The new study will analyse the feasibility of upgrading the existing 1435mm-gauge railway line along the ‘Polish / Lithuanian state border–Kaunas–RRT Palemonas’ network."

The technical parameters for this part of the project differ from the infrastructure set for the Rail Baltica Global project, which is the rail link that is planned to connect Finland to Poland via the Baltic states.

The new study will analyse the feasibility of upgrading the existing 1435mm-gauge railway line along the ‘Polish / Lithuanian state border–Kaunas–RRT Palemonas’ network, in order to achieve full compliance with the Rail Baltica Global project and other key technical parameters.

It will also evaluate all relevant options and provide a cost benefit analysis for the optimum feasible solutions to be integrated along the section.

Additionally, the study will compare alternative technical solutions and alignment options on this section in order to reach speed, capacity and other requirements to fulfil the Rail Baltica Global project definition and the relevant TSI (Technical specifications for interoperability) as part of the North Sea-Baltic TEN-T core network corridor.

The upgrade feasibility study is scheduled to be completed by December.
