Integrated railway systems provider Alstom has won a €46m contract from China’s Shanghai Shentong to modernise 68 metro cars currently in service on metro line 5.
Alstom will also provide traction and train control management systems for 198 new metro cars, which will be distributed on the existing line and its extension.

The contracted traction drives will be made by Alstom’s joint venture Shanghai Alstom Transport Electrical Equipment (SATEE).
Expected to be opened by the end of next year, the extension will include 16.6km of track and nine stations. When it opened in 2003, the line was 17.2km and had 11 stations.
In 2003, Alstom and its Chinese joint venture Shanghai Alstom Transport (SATCO) provided 68 metro cars, which will now be modernised to improve car reliability and ensure they are adapted to the line’s new signalling system.
Alstom China and East Asia’s managing director Ling Fang said: "This new contract will strengthen Alstom’s position in China.
