French rail transport company Alstom has delivered the first Metropolis train ahead of schedule to Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India.

LMRC awarded a Rs0.69bn ($150m) contract to Alstom to supply 20 four-car metro train sets and a computer-based train control (CBTC) signalling system for LMRC.

Alstom India and South Asia managing director Bharat Salhotra said: “The delivery of the first train set of Lucknow Metro marks another major milestone for Alstom in India.

“The project re-affirms our strong commitment and endorsement to ‘design and make in India’ in line with the government's vision. Manufacturing for the first Metropolis trainset has been completed in record time and ahead of schedule."

Currently under a trial phase, the new train set provides 186 seats arranged longitudinally and two zones for disabled passengers.

The vehicles are being manufactured at Alstom's facilities in SriCity and Coimbatore, India, while the Urbalis CBTC will be jointly delivered by the company’s sites in Bangalore and Saint-Ouen, France.

The company’s Citadis Spirit light rail vehicle also commenced its dynamic testing on the O-Train Confederation Line in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
