The board of directors of California-based Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority has approved the advanced conceptual engineering (ACE) draft for the light rail extension project that will connect Glendora to Montclair.

Featuring six stations, the 12.3-mile long Foothill Gold Line project will have two new light-rail tracks.

Completed after two years at a cost of $15m, the ACE document will be released to the corridor cities and related agencies for a 60-day review and comment period.

Completion of the ACE document has leaded to construction starting for the $1.2bn light rail extension by next year.

"We’ve taken lessons from the first two segments of the line and integrated them into the design for the Glendora to Montclair segment."

Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority CEO Habib Balian said: "Last night's approval is the culmination of more than two years of work, which brought the design level for the project to about 30%, with some elements designed to 50%.”

Balian also added: "We have taken lessons learned from the first two segments of the line and integrated them into the design for the Glendora to Montclair segment.

“All stations will be able to be accessed from all sides, all will have centre platforms for ease-of-use, we will be building four times the number of parking spaces than the last segment, and we will be installing fare gates at each station, to mention just a few of the improvements."

A total of 14 categories of project components were included in the draft, which has more than 700 pages of engineering drawings details of all elements of the light rail project.

The project components include design for the six proposed stations and parking facilities, 24 grade-separation bridges, 24 at-grade crossings, walls and fences, as well as street improvement measures.

It also includes the safety and communications systems and other components to be featured in the light rail project.

Funding for the project depends on voters approving Measure M, a half-cent sales tax on the November ballot in Los Angeles County.
