Network Rail has reached the final phase of its £100m Polmadie and Rutherglen Renewals (PARR) project, which aims to upgrade the railway line between Glasgow Central and Rutherglen in Scotland.

The phase will see major re-signalling and renewal works carried out at Rutherglen East Junction.

Network Rail warned that the upgrade work may cause disruption of some rail services on all routes through Rutherglen to Glasgow Central between 14 and 31 July this year.

“We are working closely with the various train operators to ensure passengers are able to get to where they need to be during this period.”

Network Rail Infrastructure director David Dickson said: “I’m sorry for the short-term disruption that this work will cause, but the long-term improvements which will be delivered will be hugely significant for services across a range of routes which will benefit thousands of passengers every day.

“We are working closely with the various train operators to ensure passengers are able to get to where they need to be during this period but it is really important that you plan ahead checking your journey details over the coming weeks to ensure you get the right information.”

Dickson added that the upgrade will be carried out during the quietest time of the year to reduce disruption but would cause unavoidable inconvenience to the passengers.

Network Rail started the PARR project in December 2016 with an aim to improve reliability and flexibility, as well as increase line speeds and improve the efficiency of train movements between the Glasgow Central and Rutherglen line.

The project will improve the signalling and overhead electrification systems, renew track and modernise the telecoms network and other supporting infrastructure of the Rutherglen East Junction.

The West Coast Mainline is also expected to benefit from the project, which is due to be completed by September this year.
