The trains are being manufactured by Alstom Transport India under a contract awarded by Mumbai Metro Rail (MMRC).

Overall, Alstom will deliver 31 trains comprising eight metro coaches each. The trains will be equipped with grade four automation to enable driverless operations.

Each air-conditioned coach will be equipped with LCD screens, a programmable digital route map indicator and passenger announcement system.

They will also feature a dedicated space to accommodate wheelchairs.

Additionally, the trains will be built with advanced air suspension for comfortable journeys and CCTV surveillance, as well as fire and smoke detectors to ensure passenger safety.

All units will be manufactured at Alstom India’s Sri City manufacturing facility in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

MMRC managing director Ashwini Bhide said: “We are happy to get unveiled the design and model of the trains for Mumbai Metro 3 today at the hands of Honourable Chief Minister.

“The manufacturing of trains would begin at Sri City factory of Alstom Transport India in November this year and the arrival of the first train is expected within a year.”

The under-construction Mumbai Metro Line 3 is a 33.5km-long underground corridor running along Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ.

Once complete, the line will feature 27 stations, of which 26 will be underground. It is expected to become operational in 2021.

Last month, Blue Star secured a contract to deliver air conditioning, tunnel ventilation and environmental control system for Line 3.

The system will be deployed at nine underground stations and related tunnels.
