The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in the US is scheduled to carry out an extensive programme of maintenance, cleaning and repair works along the three subway lines in Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York.

The overhaul work is to be carried out under the New York City Transit’s FASTRACK initiative and is also expected to advance the MTA Subway Action Plan.

All associated works are set to be carried out across four consecutive weeknights in order to minimise the impact on regular services, as well as ensure maximum efficiency for the workers.

“The unfettered track access of FASTRACK enables us to advance Subway Action Plan goals and minimise customer impact by allowing workers to do more in less time.”

The MTA Subway Action Plan aims to stabilise and modernise the subway network by eliminating delays within the subway system.

The plan will see the maintenance and repair of track and signal components, while the communication systems will also be improved to enable the passengers to plan their trips more easily.

Additionally, the development will include the removal of massive amounts of debris along the tracks, which carry the risk of causing track fires that could lead to delays.

MTA chairman Joseph Lhota said: “The unfettered track access of FASTRACK enables us to advance Subway Action Plan goals and minimise customer impact by allowing workers to do more in less time.

“We are on an urgent path to stabilising and modernising the subway system, and intensive overnight work will help us get there.”

In addition to the repair and overhauling work schedule, the workers are also scheduled to repair tunnel infrastructure, carry out painting, platform work and signage repair, as well as refurbish lighting fixtures and ADA components.

MTA has also announced plans to conduct repair works at the Manhattan stations along the N, Q, R and W subway lines in the middle of next month following the completion of the current tasks.

All FASTRACK schedules are designed to carry out maintenance or repair works by providing an adequate alternate means of transportation for passengers.
