Concession-holder Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Metro Rail has opened a new section of Hyderabad Metro in India, adding 16km of track to the existing 30km network.

A part of the Corridor 1 – Miyapur to LB Nagar (Red Line), the newly opened stretch comprises 16 stations and will run between Ameerpet and LB Nagar.

With the addition of the new metro section, the overall Hyderabad Metro network is now 46km long featuring 40 stations.

The number of daily passengers is also expected to increase from 85,000 to more than 150,000 with this addition.

L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) managing director and CEO KVB Reddy said: “Today, with the inauguration of this additional 16km stretch of this prestigious project, we have reached another significant milestone in our endeavour to create world-class infrastructure for Hyderabad.”

Currently, 18 Hyundai Rotem-built vehicles operate on the network. In order to ensure the safety of passengers, the metro network is equipped with the communication-based train control (CBTC) system provided by Thales.

Keolis is responsible for the operations and maintenance of Hyderabad Metro under a contract awarded by L&T Metro Rail in 2012.

With employee strength of 800 people, Keolis Hyderabad operates and maintains the train sets, as well as associated infrastructure including stations, depots, track, signalling, telecommunications and ticketing systems among others.

Keolis Hyderabad managing director Eric Moinier said: “This is a major milestone we have reached today alongside our client and partner Larsen & Toubro and it takes us closer to the final stage of the network’s completion, which is expected to happen within the next year.

“With this extension, more Hyderabad residents and visitors to this growing city will benefit from a modern, clean and safe transport solution.”

The overall Hyderabad Metro network is expected to become operational next year.

Once complete, the network will include a 72km network with 66 stations and is expected to carry an estimated 1.5 million passengers a day.
