A consortium of Larsen and Toubro (L&T) Construction’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure business and Japan’s IHI Infrastructure Systems (IIS) has secured a contract to deliver 28 steel bridges for the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor in India.
The ‘significant’ contract from two packages [P4(X) & P4(Y)] of the project requires the consortium to procure, fabricate, assemble, paint and transport 28 bridges, which are steel truss superstructures with bearings.

These structures, with lengths varying from 60m to 130m, will serve as crossings over railway lines, rivers, highways and roads.
L&T did not provide the exact value of the contract. However, according to its project classification, ‘significant’ orders value between Rs10bn ($136.8m) to Rs25bn ($342m).
Earlier, the National High Speed Rail (NHSRCL), which is implementing the bullet train project, estimated that around 70,000 MT of steel will be used for the fabrication of these steel bridges.
The programme is expected to support the local steel industry and associated supply chains.
