Liverpool Lime Street station in the UK has reopened following an eight-week long upgrade work as part of the Great North Rail Project.
The works, which were started in the first week of June by Network Rail, involved a remodelling of the platforms to create space and accommodate larger trains and more passengers, as well as a track overhauling to increase train movement through the station.

The modernisation of the signalling systems and overhead lines and the transfer of signalling control to the centrally-operated Manchester Rail Operating Centre were also part of the upgrade.
Network Rail London North Western route managing director Martin Frobisher said: “The transformation of Liverpool Lime Street is the station’s biggest upgrade since the 19th century.
“We’ve remodelled station platforms, making them wider and longer to make room for longer trains and more passengers. An extensive signalling upgrade also allows us to run more trains, more reliably.
“This vital upgrade is part of £340m of improvements across the Liverpool City Region and sits within the wider Great North Rail Project. This work will bring significant improvements for train customers for generations to come.”

By GlobalDataTwo new platforms, which were built last year, were also commissioned. The full usage of these two platforms is expected to begin after the completion of some final additional works on 2 September and 14 October.
UK Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: “Liverpool Lime Street passengers can now take advantage of new platforms, longer trains, more services and more seats thanks to this upgrade.”
The upgrade works represent the second phase of the station’s transformation programme, the first one having been completed last year.
