The Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Board of Airport Commissioners (BOAC) has approved a $4.9bn contract to deliver an Automated People Mover (APM) system at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
The contract was awarded to the LAX Integrated Express Solutions (LINXS) consortium which comprises Fluor, Balfour Beatty, ACS Infrastructure Development, Dragados USA, HOCHTIEF PPP Solutions and Flatiron, along with a design team from HDR and HNTB.

Under the contract, LINXS will have the responsibility to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the APM system for 30 years while Bombardier Transportation will provide the APM Operating System as well as vehicles.
To be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (P3) model, the APM will see driverless trains arriving at every station every two minutes.
The trains will have large doors for easy access with luggage, while the station platforms will be equipped with escalators, elevators and moving walkways to ensure convenient access to the terminals.
BOAC president Sean Burton said: “For decades, we have talked about linking public transportation to LAX and this has been a top priority for Mayor Garcetti and this Board.

LAWA estimates that the APM will carry up to 10,000 passengers per hour and up to 85.1 million passengers annually.
The system is scheduled to become operational in 2023.
In February, LINXS also received approval from BOAC to initiate early works associated with building the APM, valued at $42m.
