Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Alstom to develop digital technologies for railway signalling.

The MoU encompasses the development of digital signalling and interlocking technology, which will be implemented while upgrading the interlocking systems of the largest railway stations in Kazakhstan.

KTZ CEO Sauat Mynbayev said: “Modernisation of railways infrastructure is one of the priorities for the development of the country’s transport industry.

“We are confident that in partnership with Alstom, a world leader, we will launch new technologies, particularly deployment of modern signalling systems in shorter terms and at a qualitatively high level.”

Currently, Alstom maintains a depot, repair centre and two facilities in Kazakhstan with approximately 730 employees.

Its EKZ facility in Nur-Sultan is engaged in locomotives manufacturing and maintenance, as well as on-board transformer production. The other site, KEP in Almaty, manufactures point machines.

Alstom Middle East, Africa and Central Asia senior vice-president Didier Pfleger said: “Alstom has an expertise of more than 30 years and installed 1,500 interlocking systems in over 25 countries and we will be happy to bring state-of-the-art solutions to Kazakhstan to develop further our long-term exemplary partnership.”

Meanwhile, Alstom received a €70m contract to deliver ten additional Coradia Polyvalent Léman Express trains to the French region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpe. The region already maintains a fleet of 17 Coradia Polyvalent vehicles.

The French rolling stock manufacturer is expected to deliver the trains from December 2020 to May 2021.

Recently, Alstom rolled out its new-generation Citadis X05 tram on the light-rail network in north-western France.
