Israel Railways (ISR) has placed an order to procure 74 additional Bombardier TWINDEXX Vario double-deck coaches.

IST’s contract, which is part of the original agreement signed in October 2010, is valued around $166m. It also increases Israel Railways’ fleet of TWINDEXX Vario coaches to 586.

The latest order comprises 11 control cars, which ISR will operate with TRAXX electric locomotives. The control cars are also compatible to run with diesel locomotives.

The driver’s desk in the control car will also be redesigned to make it identical to the desk in the TRAXX electric locomotives.

The order includes eleven intermediate coaches with dedicated space for people with reduced mobility, as well as 52 trailer cars.

Bombardier Transportation Central and Eastern Europe and Israel president Michael Fohrer said: “We are very proud to have signed a seventh consecutive order with Israel Railways, a result of exemplary collaboration and customer satisfaction.”

With the single-car concept, ISR can configure the locomotive-hauled train sets according to requirement.

Currently, the eight-car trains operating in Israel have seating capacity for 1,000 passengers. They also meet safety, comfort and efficiency standards.

Fohrer added: “This order will strengthen and also benefit from the ongoing transformation of our two sites in Saxony, Germany.

“Görlitz, as the competence centre for car body production, and Bautzen, as our industrial lead site for serial production, will decisively contribute to the successful execution of this order.

“In addition, we will continue progressively developing our local supply base and the railway industry in Israel, in particular through the increased involvement of our final assembly site of M.T.R. Dimona, Israel.”

Last month, Bombardier was named the preferred bidder to deliver the Cairo monorail system in Egypt.
