Huawei Australia has secured a contract valued at A$136m ($100m) from Western Australia’s (WA) Public Transport Authority to develop and maintain digital radio systems across Perth’s rail network.

The end-to-end digital radio solution will be delivered as part of a project carried out by a joint venture (JV) of Huawei and engineering company UGL and will provide voice and data services across the network.

The Radio Systems Replacement project will cover 180km of PTA’s electrified rail network and the new Forrestfield Airport Link twin tunnels.

“Huawei is extending its trusted portfolio of solutions towards industry and strengthening its customer base in mission-critical market segments.”

As part of the contract, the JV will design, install and commission the service, as well as maintain the radio system for an initial period of five years with options to extend for another five years.

Following the commissioning, the system will operate over a 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) network using PTA’s current 1,800MHz spectrum.

Huawei Australia chairman John Lord said: “Huawei is extending its trusted portfolio of solutions towards industry and strengthening its customer base in mission-critical market segments.

“We are modernising the Australian transportation sector through digital technologies developed for the global market.

“We have been providing similar communications technology services to Sydney Trains and Ambulance NSW safely and securely for nearly a decade.”

The Huawei UGL JV is expected to employ local WA steel and workforce for fabricating, assembling and testing outdoor cabinets and towers of the new digital radio solution.

The 40-month long design and build period will also feature the employment of more than 50 WA-based people, including local subcontractors.
