Hitachi Rail has signed a contract with Italy’s primary train transport company Trenitalia to provide combined logistic support to the ETR 500-Frecciarossa high-speed fleet, comprising 59 trains.

Worth nearly €152.8m, the six-year contract also contains an additional two-year option.

The scope of the agreement includes repair services and the management of the train components and spare parts via the inventory stock levels’ optimisation, along with material supplies within 48 hours.

This integrated support is expected to raise the accessibility and productivity of high-speed operations in Italy.

The ETR 500 trains, which were retitled as Frecciarossa in 2008, can operate at a top speed of 300km/h.

Hitachi Rail operation service and maintenance division executive officer Edoardo La Ficara said: “We are delighted that Trenitalia has put its confidence in Hitachi Rail once again through this contract as proof of our continuous and positive collaboration. In a very difficult time that we are all experiencing, we are proud of the commitment and efforts of all our teams to guarantee the continuity of our and our customers businesses.”

Last week, Hitachi Rail signed a contract with its technological partner Trafikverket (Ester) for the deployment of its ERTMS level 2 signalling system on the Malmbanan Arctic circle section in Sweden.

This initiative will be undertaken under Sweden’s railway digitalisation programme.

Under the new contract, Hitachi Rail will upgrade the 140km-long line by providing ERTMS level 2 baseline 3.6 systems and related equipment.

The 14 stations along this line, as well as technical buildings, will also be upgraded.

Under the Ester framework, Hitachi Rail collaborated with Trafikverket for the first time in 2008.
