Italian sustainable railway sleeper manufacturer Greenrail has signed a collaboration agreement with Indra to jointly develop a model of smart sleeper.

In the following months, both the companies will assess the technical and economic feasibility of this smart sleeper that will be able to collect, analyse and transmit real-time data about trains and track conditions to the railway traffic control centres.

The collaboration, that will see the integration of the Greenrail sustainable sleeper with Indra’s advanced systems, is expected to open new avenues of predictive maintenance, as well as increase safety and reduce installation costs.

Greenrail CEO and founder Giovanni De Lisi said: “For Greenrail, signing this important agreement means a fundamental, strategic step towards creating an international partnership, aiming at improving railway sleepers’ performance and developing innovative technologies with Indra – one of the leaders of technological solutions in transport sector.”

Besides the development of the smart sleeper, the agreement includes joint development of other solutions and products for the railway sector including carrying out pilot projects for clients and research and development centres.

The agreement has been driven by Indraventures, an initiative by Indra to strengthen its business with spin-offs, startups, universities and entrepreneurs.

Following its formation, Greenrail has developed smart sleepers including Greenrail Solar, which integrates a photovoltaic panel, and Greenrail LinkBox, which includes multiple systems to transmit control and safety data.
