Frankfurt Airport operator Fraport has awarded a new €300m contract to a consortium of Siemens, Max Bögl Group and Keolis Deutschland for the construction of a fully automated Airval people mover system.
The Airval people mover will operate on a 5.6km long double-track line connecting Terminal 2 of the airport with the new Terminal 3 and the station at Terminal 1. The line will comprise three stations.

Under the terms of the contract, Siemens will supply 12 fully automated two-car trains equipped with GoA4 Communication Based Train Control Trainguard MT (CBTC).
The company will also supply the track work equipment, station platform doors, communication systems, depot equipment and power supply systems.
Furthermore, Siemens will be responsible for the operational management and maintenance of the system for five years with an option to extend it for an additional five-year period.

The Airval system will be built at Siemens’ Val world centre of competence in Toulouse, France and is scheduled to start service from 2023. The trains are expected to operate at a two-minute frequency throughout the day.
Capable of travelling at a speed of up to 80km/h, the trains will carry more than 4,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
They use a central rail guidance system to operate and will offer on-board internet connectivity as well as information displays to improve passenger convenience.
