The first 6.5km stretch of Ahmedabad Metro Phase-I in the Indian state of Gujarat has opened for commercial service.

Connecting Vastal station to Apparel Park, the stretch was inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

After inaugurating, Prime Minister Modi said that the metro network had increased from 250km to 650km in the last five years. He added that the metro projects improve connectivity in the cities, as well as provide a faster transportation option to commuters.

Construction works for the stretch began in March 2015. It forms a part of the overall 40.03km Phase-I Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project.

Metro rail officials told The Indian Express that around 70% of Phase-I works are now complete. It is expected to be completed in 18 months.

Overall, Phase-I includes two corridors and 32 stations. It is designed to connect four corners of the Ahmedabad city.

The 18.52km-long North-South Corridor stretches from Motera Stadium to APMC. This completely elevated corridor will feature 15 stations.

The East-West Corridor will be 21.16km-long, 6km of which will be underground. It will connect Vastral Gaam and Thaltej Gaam and will have 17 stations.

South Korean firm Hyundai Rotem is supplying 32 trainsets for the metro system.

Along with the opening of the first stretch of the metro system, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for the 28.2km-long Phase-II.

The first Phase-II corridor will be 22.8km-long and connect Motera with Mahatma Mandi, while the second corridor will be 5.42km-long and connect Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) to Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) and GIFT city.
