E-J Electric Installation has signed a subcontract to supply systems, electrical and transmission line work for the $1.9bn design-build commuter rail expansion of Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) operated by Metropolitan Transportation Authority in the US.

The expansion subcontract is awarded by the tri-venture of firms selected and will see the addition of a new 9.8-mile third track and other capacities for LIRR’s existing main tracks.

The track will connect Floral Park with Hicksville in New York and is estimated to transport more than 300,000 passengers daily.

The LIRR  expansion will include a number of enhancements to develop a safer rail network with reduced delays and faster commuting.

It also involves the expansion of eight existing LIRR bridges over local streets, as well as revamping of six stations and removal of seven street-level grade crossings.

Under the newly awarded deal, E-J Electric will provide upgraded signal, traction power and communication systems for these improvements to be made as part of the LIRR expansion.

Substantial construction of the expansion is expected to begin later this year, while the overall project is scheduled for completion by 2022.
