The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) in the US has issued the Final Request for Proposals (RFP) to three pre-selected contracting teams as part of the process to select the contractor to design and build the $2.1bn first phase of the Red and Purple Modernisation Program (RPM).
The three teams are the Walsh Fluor Design-Build Team, Chicago Rail Constructors and Kiewit Infrastructure Company.

To be completed in multiple phases, the overall programme will involve the reconstruction of a part of CTA’s Red and Purple lines in order to modernise and enhance the rail transit system.
Under the first phase of the RPM, four Red Line stations will be completely re-constructed to make them fully accessible to people with disabilities, and 1.3 miles of adjacent track structure will be rehabilitated.
The selected contractor will also be responsible for the building of a rail bypass north of the CTA Belmont station to reduce congestion on a 100-year-old junction where Red, Purple and Brown Lines intersect. It will enable CTA to increase the frequency of trains along the Red Line.

The final RFP of the project was devised following the issuance of a draft RFP late last year to procure the selected teams’ feedback.
CTA expects to award the contract by the end of this year, while major construction works for the project will begin in the second half of next year.
The agency has already started pre-construction works on the project, which will continue until next year.
