China has developed a new high-speed train system for cross-border operations that will facilitate connectivity with other nations.

The new high-speed system is designed to run on different track gauges, a feature that will enable these trains to operate on international routes.

According to a Xinhua report, the train is developed by state-owned rolling stock manufacturer CRRC. The system is also capable of running under different traction power supply systems and railway transportation standards.

Typically, when operations switch from one gauge to another, operators are required to change train bogies or deploy a new train, both of which are time-consuming processes.

However, the new high-speed trains are equipped with gauge-changing bogies beneath the cabins that enable the vehicle to change its rail mode seamlessly while passing through a particular section of the gauge-changing track.

CRRC has already tested the new train on the gauge-changing track that connects a 1,435mm track and a wider 1,520mm system.

These high-speed vehicles can operate at a maximum speed of 400km/h and in temperatures between -50°C and 50°C.

The introduction of the train is expected to provide a boost to international rail travel, as well as support China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative.

The news agency added that a total of 7,601 freight train trips between China and Europe were made in the first eight months of this year.

Notably, China plans to expand its railway network to 200,000km by 2035. It includes increasing its high-speed railway network to 70,000km.
