Chengdu Municipal People’s Government has announced the opening of five new metro lines in Chengdu city, which is the capital of China’s Sichuan Province.
The lines that have been opened are line 6, the first phases of lines 8, 9 and 17, as well as the eastern section of line 18.

Launched by Chengdu Metro, the new metro lines commenced operations from 18 December.
Chengdu Municipal People’s Government said that the additional lines have increased the number of metro lines in the city to 13.
In addition, the new lines have brought the overall length of Chengdu’s metro system to 558km.
Line 18 connects Chengdu with its new airport, called Chengdu Tianfu International Airport, which will start operating from 2021.

Also, Chengdu has become the fourth city in China to provide urban rail transportation.
Furthermore, an automated train system, which enables trains on the line to automatically run, stop, turn on, and carry out inspections, has been installed on Line 9.
In 2010, Chengdu Metro launched Line 1, which was its first line.
As of now, it has transported over six billion passengers, with the average daily number of passengers exceeding four million.
In August, China unveiled a large railway network expansion plan to support urbanisation and boost local economies.
State-owned firm China State Railway Group issued a new plan that aims to expand the network to around 200,000km by the end of 2035.
China currently has around 141,400km of rail lines in the country, making it the second-largest rail network in the world. It includes 36,000km of high-speed rail lines.
