Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF has signed a contract worth more than €100m to supply 18 Urbos Trams to Indian company Larsen & Toubro.

Larsen & Toubro is currently constructing a 26km Integrated Light Rail Transit System in the Republic of Mauritius as part of a €450m development project.

CAF will supply 18 bi-directional low-floor trams for the project as part of the contract, which will each comprise seven modules.

The scope of the contract also includes the delivery of a signalling system, automatic vehicle location system (AVLS) and transit signal priority system (TSPS), as well as a variety of depot equipment and a driving simulator.

The development is expected to significantly improve the country’s transport infrastructure and is scheduled to connect five major cities in Mauritius, namely Curepipe, Vacoas, Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes and the capital Port Louis.

It will comprise a total of 19 stations and cover an area inhabited by around 600,000 people.

The 26km network is estimated to be completed within 48 months, while the first phase of the project is expected to be completed within 24 months.

CAF has also been selected to deliver three new seven-module trams for the capital of Araba, Vitoria-Gasteiz under a separate €14.5m contract.

The scope of the agreement also encompasses the expansion of three currently operating units from their existing five modules to a seven-module configuration.
