Busan Transportation has started operating five new eight-car trains, which feature Toshiba Infrastructure Systems & Solutions’ (Toshiba-ISS) permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), on the Metro Line 1 in Busan, South Korea.
Metro Line 1 is a subway line running from north to south through Busan, the second largest city in South Korea.

The 40km-long line became the first of its kind in South Korea to operate trains powered by Toshiba-ISS’ PMSM propulsion system.
Through the Woojin Industrial System, Toshiba-ISS has supplied the PMSMs and other key components to Hyundai Rotem Company, which has built the new trains for Metro Line 1.
The PMSM propulsion systems are expected to reduce power consumption by more than 30% compared to conventional propulsion systems.
According to Toshiba-ISS, the PMSM system is a high-efficiency motor designed to deploy permanent magnets in the rotor.
