An Atkins-led consortium has secured a contract for the development of a masterplan to equip Sheffield Midland Railway Station for the HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) services.
In addition to SNC-Lavalin Group unit Atkins, the consortium comprises Cushman & Wakefield, Lambert Smith Hampton, Merrett Houmøller Architects and Quatro PR.

Work will include creating a plan to enable high-quality and efficient passenger interchange, optimising economic, social and environmental benefits throughout the region, as well as developing an outline to achieve short and long-term benefits.
Atkins project director Mike Gardner said: “Our masterplan will help ensure that by the time HS2 arrives in Sheffield, the station will be a focal point for the city and offer a first-class experience for passengers.
“Crucially, we’re also planning beyond the station to ensure that adjacent commercial and residential developments are a catalyst for delivering the city’s wider growth and regeneration ambitions.”
The consortium has been selected by a partnership that includes Sheffield City Council, Sheffield City Region, London and Continental Railways, Department for Transport, HS2 and Ministry of Housing among other members.

By GlobalDataSheffield City Council business and investment cabinet member Mazher Iqbal said: “This is a clear indication of how important the new HS2 station location is to Sheffield and the wider city region.
“The station is absolutely central to our city centre masterplan vision to deliver new jobs, businesses and opportunities to the region.”
HS2 services are scheduled to start in 2033. However, the redevelopment of the Sheffield station is estimated to bring multiple economic benefits to the city immediately.
It is also expected to enable faster and frequent train services to various cities including Manchester, Leeds and other northern cities.
