Ansaldo Signalling and Transportation Systems (STS) Malaysia has secured a railway signalling contract for 198km of track between Gemas and Johor Bahru.

Ansaldo STS Malaysia is also a partner of the Ansaldo STS Pestech consortium.

Under the MYR264m ($63m) contract, Ansaldo STS will be responsible for the delivery of mainline signalling system based on MicroLok II interlocking, wayside automatic train protection (ATP) and train control systems for the operations centre at KL Sentral and Control Centre at Gemas.

The Gemas to Johor Bahru signalling upgrade project includes 11 stations and the Kempas Baru Depot.

The work is part of Keretapi Tanah Melau Berhad’s (KTMB) initiative to upgrade Malaysia’s rail network. Also known as Malayan Railways, KTMB is the main rail operator in Peninsular Malaysia.

KTMB’s new contract is the latest in a series of signalling projects awarded to Ansaldo STS, which is currently working on the Klang Valley Double Track (KVDT) project.

Last month, FLOW consortium leader Ansaldo STS secured a contract from ArRiyadh Development Authority (ADA) to provide operation and maintenance services for the lines three, four, five and six of Riyadh Metro.

The 12-year contract includes the mobilisation period and is worth $2.9bn to the FLOW consortium.

During the same month, Ansaldo STS secured a $42m contract from Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to design and build a new signalling system using computer-based train control.
