Alstom and its joint venture units SATEE and CASCO have secured two contracts to supply traction systems for 200 metro cars, as well as a CBTC signalling system, for the entirety of Chengdu metro line 9’s phase I in China.

The two contracts possess a combined value of €64m and have been awarded by Chengdu Railway.

Alstom China & East Asia managing director Ling Fang said: “With its international service proven references in driverless metro and its successful execution of driverless metro lines in Beijing and Shanghai, Alstom and its joint ventures are confident delivering these two projects in high level of excellence.”

The 22km-long Chengdu Line 9 phase I driverless metro line will comprise a total of 11 stations and is scheduled to start revenue service by the end of 2020.

The line is expected to connect the city’s CBD area with the West Railway station in the northwest.

Alstom will supply its OptONIX metro traction system as part of the deal, which was designed specifically for the Chinese market.

All these traction systems will be manufactured by SATEE and Chengdu Alstom Transport Electrical Equipment (CATEE) in collaboration with Xi’an Alstom Yongji Electric Equipment, as well as two additional European Alstom sites.

In addition, the company is also set to install its Urbalis signalling system on the Chengdu Line 9 in collaboration with CASCO.

The signalling system has previously been ordered by 54 Chinese metro lines, including 32 that have successful commenced revenue services.

Alstom has won contracts to supply traction systems for 1,252 metro cars deployed across three metro lines in Chengdu to date.
