Alstom has introduced its new-generation Citadis X05 tram on the light-rail network in north-western France.

All 26 vehicles will operate on the three new lines on the Caen la Mer network.

Alstom France senior vice-president Jean-Baptiste Eyméoud said: “Just one year after the first tram was presented at the La Rochelle site, it is with great pride that Alstom and its teams take part in this inauguration.

“Thanks to their reliability, availability and ease of maintenance, we have total confidence in the ability of the 26 Citadis trams to meet the growing mobility requirements of the inhabitants of the Urban Community of Caen la Mer.”

The 33m-long Citadis X05trams for Caen la Merare are capable of carrying more than 210 passengers.

The trams are equipped with six extra-wide passenger information screens, large windows and USB charging sockets.

Additionally, the vehicles can climb slopes with gradients up to 8% and feature six double doors on each side to facilitate passenger boarding.

They also feature 100% LED lighting and optimised air conditioning.

Alstom’s eight French sites were involved with the development of the Citadis trams.

Overall, the French rolling stock manufacturer has sold more than 2,600 Citadis trams to more than 50 cities in 20 countries.

In December last year, Nice Côte d’Azur urban area of France deployed Citadis X05 trams on the T2 line, including the newly opened west-east light-rail extension.

Recently, Alstom introduced the Atlas ERTMS Level 2 signalling system on the Spanish high-speed rail system.
