Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) in southern India has signed an agreement to deploy US-based technology firm Trimble’s Nexala rail asset management solutions.

The move will allow CMRL to access up-to-date fleet status and improve real-time status monitoring and analytics capability, which will enhance the overall fleet availability and reliability.

As well as cutting expenses, the new technology is also expected to improve safety.

The platform, which will be deployed by Trimble and its Chennai-based partner KKM SOFT, will be one of the first examples of digital real-time, condition-based monitoring launched by an Indian rail operator.

“Deploying Trimble R2M and E2M means CMRL can maximise benefits with remote diagnostics, condition monitoring and analytics delivered via one interface, providing a consolidated view of on-train and wayside systems.”

The solutions will include the Trimble R2M real-time remote diagnostics system and Trimble E2M engineering rail asset management system.

Trimble Rail Solutions Business general manager Tomas Larsson said: “Because Trimble’s rail asset lifecycle management products are an interoperable suite, CMRL will be able to implement a seamless solution that meets their needs.

Once implemented, CMRL’s ability to make data-driven decisions to determine its fleet’s operational status will improve. The new solutions will also assist CMRL with the root cause analysis of faults and modernise maintenance planning and execution.

Trimble R2M will process diagnostic data from CMRL’s Alstom rolling stock in real-time and share a complete picture of the overall fleet status, including specific and potential vehicle faults.

It will also allow CMRL to reorganise maintenance, parts and materials usage and help to supervise resource allocation and procurement processes.
