Fluor-Walsh JV begins $2.1bn Chicago rail modernisation project

Engineering and construction firm Fluor and its joint venture partner Walsh Construction Company began the Red and Purple Line Modernisation programme of Chicago Transit Authority (CTA).

The phase one of the Red and Purple Line Modernisation is the largest project undertaken by the CTA.

The $2.1bn project is jointly funded by federal and local governments.


EU commits $966m to modernise Polish rail network

The European Union (EU) unveiled plans to invest more than €880m ($966m) in two projects to improve the rail network in Poland.

The projects will focus on increasing the speed, safety and capacity of the Polish rail network.

A total of €838m has been granted to overhaul the 214.5km-long southern section of the railway line No 131, which links Chorzów Batory station with Zduńska Wola Karsznice station.

Alstom wins deal to deliver 42 trains for Barcelona Metro

Alstom received a contract to supply 42 Metropolis trains to Barcelona Metro operator Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB).

The contract is worth more than €260m ($285.2m), of which the EU bank will provide €205m ($224.8m).

These five-car trains will replace the old vehicles that serve lines 1 and 3 of the metro network.


Siemens-led consortium launches autonomous tram project in Germany

A consortium led by Siemens Mobility planned to take up a fully automated tram depot research project in Potsdam, Germany.

The consortium consists of Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam (ViP), the Institute for Climate Protection, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Codewerk GmbH, Energy and Mobility (IKEM) and Mapillary.

Named AStriD (Autonomous Tram in Depot), the project is funded by Federal Ministry for Transportation and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) under its ‘Modernity Fund’ (mFUND) research initiative.


Nigeria awards $3.9bn Abuja-Lokoja rail line contract to CRCC

The Nigerian Federal Government awarded a $3.9bn public-private partnership contract for the new Abuja-Itakpe-Lokoja rail line to China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC).

Passing through Baro, the rail line will have a branch line to the Kogi State capital Lokoja.

As per the agreement, the Chinese firm will also construct a seaport at Warri.


Amtrak to refurbish four New Jersey stations

US-based passenger railway service Amtrak announced plans to refurbish four New Jersey train stations in collaboration with NJ Transit.

The project was kicked off by Governor Phil Murphy, NJ Transit CEO Kevin Corbett and Amtrak Board Chairman Tony Coscia.

The four stations that will receive improvements are New Brunswick, Trenton Transit Center, Princeton Junction and Elizabeth Station.


Bangladesh approves two additional metro-rail projects worth $11bn

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) of Bangladesh approved two large mass rapid transit (MRT) projects worth BDT940bn ($10.8bn).

The approval has been granted for MRT Line 1 and MRT Line 5 (Northern Route), which will overhaul Dhaka’s transport system.

Around BDT690.4bn will be financed by external organisations, such as Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).


EU launches call worth €1.4bn to fund sustainable transport projects

European Union (EU) launched a €1.4bn call to support sustainable transport projects under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

The funding will be for building missing connections across Europe between 2021 and 2027.

The fund is divided into two parts, the Cohesion envelope worth €650m and the General envelope worth €750.


Mobilinx wins $3.5bn contract to build Hurontario LRT in Canada

Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx awarded a C$4.6bn ($3.5bn) contract to Mobilinx consortium to build the Hurontario Light Rail Transit (LRT) in Ontario, Canada.

Hurontario General Partnership will be responsible for the design, build, financing, operation and maintenance of the rail project for a period of 30 years.

The Hurontario LRT project will run through and connect Mississauga and Brampton.

The 18km rail line will comprise 19 stops, with connections to GO Transit’s Milton and Lakeshore West rail lines.


Thailand signs $7.4bn high-speed train project agreement

The Government of Thailand and Charoen Pokphand Holding-led consortium signed a THB224.5bn ($7.4bn) agreement to build a high-speed rail network to connect three major airports.

The 220km-long high-speed railway line will connect Suvarnabhumi Airport with Don Mueang International Airport and U-Tapao International Airport.

This project is one of the major infrastructure projects to be developed in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) investment zone. The project will be adopted by State Railway of Thailand (SRT) through public-private-partnership.
